RAISING HOPE: THE EQUAL VOICE STORY
chronicles five families whose lives were changed when they participated in a nationwide effort to lift themselves out of poverty. The Equal Voice Campaign of 2008 included single moms like Charmaine Parker, whose income barely covered her living expenses, and New Orleans dad Brandon Mitchell, struggling to raise three children on earnings as a barber. Through a series of town hall meetings and conventions, Parker, Mitchell and 15,000 other low-income families joined to develop public policy solutions to the country's most pressing social and economic ills. Then they collected these ideas in a National Family Platform and delivered them to legislators in Washington, D.C. Two years later, as the Great Recession sweeps millions more into poverty, their words are even more relevant. Hear what low-income families have to say about what it will take for the poor to make it in America.
